Vibrant. Bold. Soulful. These are all adjectives that capture the essence of Barbadian artist, Jeena Chatrani’s work. A talented Caribbean colourist and impressionist whose works are sought after by collectors around the world, Jeena often portrays Barbadian elements in a non-traditional way. Painting only with palette knives and unmixed paints straight out of the jar, Jeena’s work is easily recognizable by its rougher texture, bright colors, and modern feel. Her unexpected, fresh approach is certainly charting an exciting new course for what it means to be a successful 21st-century Caribbean artist. The One recently chatted with Jeena about her creative process and learned about how growing up amidst the sunshine and sea continues to inspire her work.

You could say that the clear blue waters of Barbados and its sea turtles have been one of Jeena’s primary artistic inspirations. Jeena reveals she has a “soft spot” for painting turtles because of her experiences swimming with them and that she attempts to paint these gentle creatures in a way that makes you feel as if you are actually underwater with them.

While Jeena loves to paint turtles, she has painted a number of other subjects including animals, flowers, religious symbols and celebrities like Bob Marley and Barbados’ own music royalty, Rihanna. Jeena also actively uses social media to share her work and follows what other young artists are creating on Facebook and Instagram.
